Check out Christine and Nick on the CW

Christine Green's piece about healthy snacks in UA vending machines caught the attention of the powers that be. Check out the comment section on her piece.
Nick's piece, ought to stir it up. Way to go!

Hey guys,
Shirley Darr, the director of vending services, sent an e-mail to me this morning asking for suggestions of healthy snacks and which buildings on campus I think would benefit from the healthy snacks. She was very pleasant and expressed a true desire to accommodate the students.

I had already made a list over the weekend based on my friends and my own wishes. I requested in order of preference (since I don't know how many new snacks will be allowed):
Baked Lays Potato chips
Nature Valley granola bars (any flavor)
Mini-Cereal Boxes (Honey Nut Cheerios, Frosted Mini-wheats, pretty much any cereal that can be eaten by hand without milk)
Chex Mix
Power Bars or Balance Bars or any type of energy/protein bar
Rold Gold Pretzels

We are supposed to talk on the phone tomorrow, so if you have any requests or comments, please let me know. I also suggested putting the healthy snacks on the same row(s) to be more effective in creating nutritional awareness. And I listed, in order of preference, Bidgood, Reese Phifer, Gordon Palmer, ten Hoor and BB Comer as buildings that I saw as high traffic areas of students buying snacks. She will probably start small with just Bidgood, Reese Phifer and Gordon Palmer machines to see how well the new snacks sell.

I'm so excited that we might actually get healthy snacks in the machines, and even more excited by the fact that my little-ole opinion piece turned out to be not so little.

You should tell them to put more dried fruit in the machines.

That stuff is delicious, not bad for you and will stay good forever, under any kind of temperature confiditions.

This is very cool! I'm excited about finally finding good stuff in the machines.

Does this mean I can't get sour cream and cheddar Ruffles anymore?

Of course you can get your sour cream-n-chedder Ruffles, you just might not find the Funions or Buddy Bars. If any changes are made, they will probably take out the items with the lowest sales and put in a row of wonderful, heart-saving, health food. Yippy!

What is a Funion anyway? A synthetic, vegetable version of a porkrind? Yuck.

Oops, funions are spelled Funyuns, which in my opinyun sounds much less appetizing. And yes, they are an evil-doing snack: they have a nutritional value of zero, saturated fat, high salt content, and they leave you with some nasty breath.
